On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast assortment of rolling stock designed to carry coal.

As Britain rebuilt itself after WWII, the demand for coal soared and it was decided that a standard coal carrying vehicle was required to improve efficiency. The new standard was based on the 1930’s LNER design and was of an all steel construction.

Over 23,000 of these new standard wagons were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued into service into the early 1980’s Due to the heavy wear and tear these wagons were subject to, many were modified and rebuilt.
