Even outside of the Bundeswehr forces, DKW Munga served as an indispensable companion in the erstwhile Cold War" since the 1960s. The young Federal Republic equipped the Bundeswehr and enlarged its civil defence forces at the same time. To this end, the nation procured a large variety of vehicles, including the German answer to such reputable all-wheel drive vehicles as the US Jeep or the British Land Rover. The Munga was later to be used as a guide vehicle in the civil protection guards and was one of the best-known German military vehicles subsumed in the so-called 0.25-ton class. Until well into the 1990s, the two-stroke vehicle remained in use before the civil protection guards were dissolved after the reunification. Many of Munga vehicles found their way to other aid organizations, were repainted there or remained in their service clad in khaki grey paintwork."
