Woodland scenics

Totally flat areas of land are very rare in nature. They usually occur as part of human intervention when a large flat area is required. A prime example is the railway, which has large expanses of flat land in stations, good yards, dockyards, and so on.

Therefore, one way to add realism to your model railway layout is to make it look like it was carved out of undulating land with cuttings and embankments where necessary. This means that inside of your railway perimeter fence, you need to replicate the flat nature and gentle gradients of the railway itself. In many cases, these areas will be higher than baseboard level to allow the terrain of the land to be below the level of the railway as well as above.

A quick and easy way to build up large flat areas above baseboard level is to use these boards from Woodland Scenics. They are easily cut to size and can be stacked if necessary to obtain the required height from the baseboard. Each sheet is 12” x 24” (300mm x 600mm).
