A marathon is a special challenge for athletes. They have to run 42 kilometres in one go. Many marathon runners train for an event like this for a whole year.

Legend tells that during a battle in Ancient Greece, a messenger ran from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce the victory of the Athenians. This was about 40 kilometres. This messenger collapsed upon arrival in Athens and dropped dead.
