To accommodate the installation of the NEM pocket, a small channel needs to be created in the bogie beam where the old coupling is located. It is essential to maintain the pocket at a specific height to ensure compatibility with tension locks or Kadee couplers. The NEM pocket features U-shaped channels on either side, with the bottom of the channel meeting the underside of the end beam of the bogie. Before proceeding, the old coupling must be removed.
To prepare the bogie beam for the NEM pocket, a square section measuring 3mm in height and 5.75mm in width must be removed from the centre of the beam. This can be achieved using tools such as a disc cutter in a mini-drill and needle files. The process may take approximately 10-15 minutes per bogie. It is advisable to continuously check the progress throughout the modification.
The U-shaped channel wraps around the bottom of the beam, ensuring it remains at the correct height. Once you have tested and are satisfied with the fit, the pocket can be securely glued in place. We recommend using epoxy glue for the best adhesion and durability as it offers excellent resistance to vibrations and movement, which are common in model railway operations.
It's important to note that the maximum thickness of the beam to which the pocket attaches is 1.8mm, as this is the extent to which the U-shaped channel can accommodate.
