Nissen Hut
These prefabricated structures were the brainchild of American-born, Canadian-British inventor and engineer Major Peter Norman Nissen who developed the design during World War One. Deployed extensively during both World Wars, these half cylindrical huts were made of corrugated steel sheets fixed to a metal frame and could provide accommodation for troops, prisoners of war and civilians – indeed many were used for temporary housing following the Second World War. With examples still in existence across the UK – many having been given a new lease of life as business premises and recreational spaces to name just two – this model can be justified in any scene set from the First World War to the present day.
