The longevity of foam underlay can vary depending on a number of factors such as the quality of the foam, the temperature and humidity in the model railway environment and the amount of wear and tear on the underlay. On average, foam underlay can last for several years or more if it is properly installed and maintained. That said, for layouts that are intended to last more than 8-10 years it is recommended to use specific particulate ballast to for longevity.
Foam underlay does have some advantages, especially for layouts that are intended for short-duration use. Firstly, it may well work out cheaper than other alternatives and also be quicker to install. Another major plus point for short-duration layouts using foam underlay is that the track will be easy to remove at the end of the layout's life and can then be re-used on other projects.
