How do magnetic couplings work?
Magnetic couplings are popular with many modellers who desire the automatic uncoupling of rolling stock in their sidings or goods yards.
Most magnetic couplings are a type of Janney coupler (knuckle coupler) and can be fitted directly into NEM pockets. The couplings feature a whisker-like curved metal bar that hangs discreetly from the underside of the hinged mechanism. When the coupling passes over a track magnet, the bar is drawn to the side and the coupling releases.
The beauty of this particular design is the coupling cannot release if it's taut against another coupling. That means a train fitted with magnetic couplings can travel over magnets without rolling stock being separated. To uncouple, the train must first come to a complete stand, thus tension is lost and the coupling can release.
