What does RTR mean in model railways?
In model railways, the term RTR is mostly used to describe rolling stock or locomotives that are classified as 'ready-to-run'. The term is frequently used as a marketing ploy and as such over the years different manufacturers have sought to put their own particular spin on the original description. As a result, it is quite possible that modelers may find RTR also being described as 'ready-to-roll'.
Marketing considerations aside, in practical terms all iterations of the term RTR are used to distinguish between items that can be utilised straight out of the box on a layout and other items that are produced in kit form and as such will require some degree of assembly prior to use.
Interestingly enough the term RTR has the same meaning for radio-controlled modelers to describe an item that is 'ready-to-run' straight out of the box
