Split spoke wheels came in a variety of ornate designs and typically had a diameter of three-foot. As well as the cost benefits, another advantage of the wheels was their ability to absorb some of the vibrations and bumps experienced by un-sprung wagons of the Victorian era. Although few new open spoke wheels were produced into the 20th century, the robust longevity of the wheels already in service meant that examples could still be seen for many years after production ended.
