What is a sheet rail on a wagon?
A sheet rail, more commonly referred to as a tarpaulin bar or longitudinal bar, is a metal bar that is suspended above a railway wagon to support tarpaulins.
Some early wagons were built with raised semi-circular end panels to support and manipulate tarpaulins into a taut shape that was free from sags and couldn't collect water or foul the goods. This design was gradually replaced from the early 1900s with the introduction of tarpaulin bars that ran the entire length of a wagon to provide greater support at a lower cost.
These types of wagons became synonymous with china clay workings and could be seen on the network right up until the 1980s.
