What gauge is most realistic?

Which is the most realistic gauge? This is likely to have been the topic of conversation during many modellers tea breaks, internet chats or long car journeys to exhibitions.

The answer to this debate depends on which angle you are viewing the topic from.

One thing is for sure, it only takes a quick flick through the pages of a glossy railway modelling magazine to realise that modellers these days achieve remarkable results no matter which gauge they have chosen.

For those at the very beginning of your model railway journey, there are a few things that you can consider to help you choose the gauge that is right for you if realism is your end goal.

In Britain, the two most common gauges are 00 and N gauge. This is an important factor because their popularity means that there are lots of products available out there to help you build not only a realistic railway layout but one that you want, in an era that you want, set in a location that you want and using virtually any rolling stock that you want. This is not so much true when it comes to other gauges. That is not to say that realism can't be achieved in gauges outside N and 00, but it would certainly be more of a challenge, with less ready to go products available, for you to have an absolute choice over what you model would require a certain amount of scratch building.

So this brings us back to the two-horse race, and unfortunately, there isn't going to be a definitive answer to the question because both have their advantages.

There's no doubt detail is much easier to apply and see in 00 gauge, weathering can be done with more finesse and smaller mass-produced products are crisper and sharper too, but on the other hand N gauge has the advantage of being smaller meaning that bends don't have to be so tight enabling them to closely resemble the world around us. For the same reason trains can often be longer and more akin to their prototypes, also much more scenery can be fitted onto the baseboard which generally returns more realistic effects.

So the answer to the question what gauge is most realistic is in the hands of the modeller's intentions. If your scene is very focused on a small stretch of railway, for example, a branch-line terminus or depot scenario then 00 gauge is likely to allow more detail and realism. If however, you intend to model a large scene with considerable scale distance involved, then N gauge wins the day.

This assumption doesn't allow for challenges such as space restrictions or personal preference etc. but hopefully, it gives you a starting point and a few things to think about before you start to build what we are sure will be a fantastically realistic model railway.
