How can I create realistic looking platforms for my layout ?

Creating realistic looking platforms for a model railway layout is an important aspect of bringing a station scene to life.

Here are some steps to help achieve this :

Research : start by looking at real-life platforms for inspiration. Study photographs and visit train stations to observe the details such as the platform height, materials used, and any unique features.

Scale and size : determine the scale of the model railway (e.g., OO/HO, N, OO9 or O) and ensure that the platform matches the appropriate scale. Measure the dimensions of the platform area to determine its size.

Baseboard preparation : before constructing the platform, prepare the baseboard by ensuring it is level and smooth. If necessary, use materials such as foam board or plywood to create a solid foundation.

Materials : choose appropriate materials to construct the platform. For the platform surface, materials such as styrene sheets, cardstock or textured plastic sheets can be used. For the edges, consider using brick or stone paper, plastic strips or even real wood.

Texturing and painting : once the platform surface is in place, add texture and colour to make it look realistic. Use a mixture of paint, weathering powders, and washes to create a worn and weathered appearance. Add details such as cracks, stains, and patches to enhance the realism.

Platform accessories : to bring the platform to life, add accessories such as benches, ticket machines, litter bins and signage. These small details will add depth and realism to the scene.

Weathering : weathering is an essential step to make the platform look authentic. Use weathering techniques such as dry brushing, washes and rust effects to simulate wear and tear.

Lighting : consider adding lighting to the platform to create a realistic atmosphere. Use LED lights to simulate platform lighting or add lamp posts for a night-time effect.

People and figures : finally, populate the platform with figures and passengers to bring it to life. Choose figures that are appropriate for the scale and position them realistically, such as waiting for a train or walking along the platform.
