In 1944, a much needed development of the regular Spitfire design was implemented in the form of a bubble canopy. Spitfires always had a vulnerability in that pilots had a blind spot to the rear of the aircraft, the bubble canopy, inspired by aircraft such as the Mustang, solved this problem and first appeared on the LF MkIX earning them the nickname Low Backs thanks to their distinctive shape.
