The Avro Lancaster was the RAF's most famous heavy bomber during World War II and was put into service in 1942. More than 7,300 aircraft were built for the Royal Air Force Bomber Command. One of the main goals of the RAF was to destroy the dams in the Ruhr area, which supplied important industrial plants with electricity.
In order to effectively hit tough targets such as dams or dams, a dam-blowing rotary bomb was developed, better known as a bouncing bomb. A new unit was set up specifically for this attack, the 617th Squadron, which was under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Guy Gibson. Under the code name Operation Chastise, this attack with 19 Lancaster bombers took place on the night of May 16-17, 1943.
