Can I convert my model railway layout from analogue to digital?

In theory, converting a regular analogue model railway to DCC involves little more than swapping your controller and ensuring all of your locomotives are DCC fitted, but in reality, there is much more to consider.

Firstly though, let's take a look at starter sets which are now slowly becoming available in DCC. They come just like any other starter set with a regular oval of track and maybe a siding or two. The only difference is they come with a DCC controller, a DCC fitted locomotive and a different power clip. So that is what we mean when we say that in theory, the controller and locos are all that has to change. However, the more scaled up from that benchmark your layout is, the more changes you are likely going to have to make.

One consideration of DCC operation is power outages and dead spots. With a brand new starter set these are likely to be infrequent due to the young age of the track and the lack of it. For a larger layout that has been in situ for a while, the chances are there will be more locations that suffer from less than perfect conductivity. That is something that you really don't want on a DCC layout as it can corrupt your locomotive's settings. To solve the problem, you may want to consider installing power feeds to multiple locations around the layout to minimise the risk. Installing electro frog points will also help with this.

Another good reason for installing multiple power feeds to your layout is the flexibility it provides. Perhaps one of the main reasons for making the conversion in the first place is to enable the movement of any train, in any direction, at any time regardless of what other trains on the layout are doing. Although a DCC system will facilitate this, it does rely on the track being powered to do so. Assuming your layout has turnouts, there will inevitably be dead sections of track beyond preventing you from shunting in a siding while the express thunders down the mainline. If all sections of your track have a power feed, you can shunt to your heart's content.

Another thing to consider when converting to DCC is your powered accessories such as signals, lighting and points etc. These can continue to be operated via your analogue controller and traditional switches if you wish and kept completely independent of your DCC system. But if you want to operate them from your new controller, you will have to make some changes such as installing accessory decoders to control them. And even then, unless your new DCC controller has an appropriate auxiliary port, you will still need to use your old analogue controller to provide power to them.

Finally, you should consider how many of the locomotives in your collection can actually run on DCC. It may sound like a good idea to convert all of your engines, but have you done the maths? Decoders are not cheap and even converting just a few locomotives can cost hundreds of pounds. There are ways you can have your old analogue controller set up at the same time as your new one to facilitate alternative running sessions, but if you are considering this, you should be confident that you know what you're doing as a conflict of electrical interests could prove to be a very costly mistake.
